When we look to buy new furniture, we often believe it is not within our budget to buy oak furniture. But the fact is that the hardwood option is usually the most economical option and, for a number of reasons, oak is the best in that category.
Of course, when it comes to buying furniture for the home, style and appearance are also key factors in the decision making process. That is why there is vast selection of styles available, from the rustic to the contemporary. And it is no different when the material is oak, with oak dining sets that exude everything from charismatic elegance to homely earthiness. In the bedroom, the solid reliability, even timelessness, of oak beds provide a greater sense of security that plays no small part in encouraging good quality, deep sleep.
However, while these factors illustrate the high desirability of oak, it is the perceived high cost of oak that makes many hesitate in making the purchase. This is somewhat understandable as the furniture market is awash with cheaper makes. In fact, because furniture that is made from solid oak is seen as more expensive, many will argue that its affordability is lower. But this is not actually the case, as oak is guaranteed to last far longer than composite and plywood furniture options that cost so much less.
Oak is famed for its lasting appeal, with oak beams, posts and furniture that are several hundred years old still existing in homes around the world. Oak is a superior hardwood, which means its durability is high, and solid oak, as opposed to oak veneers, means that the piece is not ruined should chipping occur. In fact, many have the opinion that chipped oak adds to the character of the piece itself.
This is a matter of taste, of course, but in a typical home, wear and tear can take its toll on wood. The advantage with oak then, is that one does not have to worry about a lamp stand, coffee table, chairs or a dining table being ruined over time. It will last, both structurally and aesthetically.
Oak is also versatile, accommodating a range of colour stains that makes it possible to match practically any room decor. It is also often used in unison with metal, such as stainless steel or chrome, to produce a contemporary style that can enrich a modern home with the earthiness of that traditional, rustic charm.
Dining room sets in oak are amongst the most popular choices, for precisely this reason. For example, for those who prefer the traditional style, Turin Oak can satisfy. The thick, square, solid design ensures that it is the focal point of the room, but with a humility that natural wood provides. The tables come in a range of sizes and can be bought singly, with matching chairs available separately. It is also possible to get matching furniture, such as sideboards, cabinets and even wine racks.
For the more contemporary look, the Tavio oak and chrome range provides a blend of nature and urban feels to produce a modern but homely set of furniture. The sheen of the chrome inserts and leg supports lightens the look of the furniture, contributing to the airy spaciousness of the contemporary room. The dining table is also generally available on its own, with chairs available to match.
With regards the bedroom, a different feel to furniture is desired. This is mainly to do with the sense of privacy that is connected with a bedroom, with a far more personal decor chosen. However, privacy is always accompanied by senses of comfort and security, and oak provides both in abundance through the design and the material used.
Amongst the most desired are Chateau styled solid oak beds, which boast elegance based on 18th century French designs. The chief attraction is the smooth flowing surface, which stretches from headboard to the end of the bed itself, though a sprung slat platform under the mattress ensures a remarkable level of comfort.
To buy oak furniture, and in particular those made of solid oak, is to invest in a piece of furniture that will last generations. Whether one is in the market for oak dining sets or are looking for a bed of solid oak, the quality and durability of oak makes the purchases a sound investment for generations to enjoy.
