Four Essentials to Consider When Choosing Living Room Oak Furniture

To many home owners, the living room is more than just a room. It is an enclave away from the hassles of the world, where television, a relaxing cup of coffee or, on occasion, a glass or two of red wine, can be enjoyed. But to fully attain the potential comfort level, the right furniture in the most pleasing style must be present. And for the living room, oak furniture is amongst the favourites.

In truth, oak is popular in every room, from the oak dining table that sits a half dozen diners on special occasions to the typical bedroom oak furniture, beds and wardrobes for example. However, when it comes to the living room, careful consideration is given to comfort, what is more pleasing to the eye and how at home one feels. In this respect, there are four main pieces of furniture that can be considered essential.

Coffee Tables

What living room can be without a coffee table. After all, the purpose of the room is to lounge and relax. A perfect setting to enjoy a cup of coffee, a green tea or a glass of wine. And that is the purpose of a coffee table, providing a simple platform on which to place a drink, while otherwise whiling the day away.

Oak coffee tables are highly durable and tend to handle the wear and tear of family life pretty well. The range of designs that the piece comes in also means that the perfect coffee table for absolutely every style of decor is there. Of course, those with drawers help to provide some valuable extra storage space.

Book Cases

Highly useful, and very inviting, bookshelves have practical and decorative roles to play in a living room. On the one hand, they are naturally designed to house books but, increasingly, they are being used to display family photographs and small collections of candles or delicate glasswork.

Some oak models will feature small drawers in which to place small items, sometimes located at the very base, and sometimes on the side, stacked upon each other.

Sideboards

These have long been essential in a living room, providing storage space for many different types of things. For some home owners, it is used almost as a type of general office store, with bills, receipts and documents of different types kept in the drawers, of which the common design includes six or eight. Meanwhile, behind the cabinet doors are shelves sporting anything from bicycle pumps to extra crockery and drinking glasses.

Of course, all of these things are hidden from view. What is not are bowls of fruit, interesting sculptures or perhaps glass or ceramic art work on its top. And, of course, such a prominent piece with a rustic or distressed oak design can be something of an art work in itself.

TV Cabinets

With the technological developments of the last decade, large, heavy TV screens are a thing of the past, but that has not meant a reduction in the quality of TV cabinets. Oak cabinets are obviously very sturdy, making sure to keep all of the equipment housed in and sitting on the cabinet safe.

The lighter screens are generally wider, fitting across the top of the typical cabinet in near perfect symmetry. But the real advantage is that DVD players and the films that they play, are kept tidily away, safe from the wear and tear that affects so many things in the living room. The doors are generally glazed to allow clear sight of the items inside, while wide drawers are also often included, for book and letter storage.

It is easy to draw up a list of essentials for a modern living room, but the decision on what is needed still comes down to what those who will live in the room want. However, it is certain that the range of living room oak furniture available is certain to have something to satisfy every conceivable taste.

And that is true not just for living room furniture, with oak dining table and chairs sets sporting styles from the traditional to the modern, and oak furniture beds available in simple frames and elegant, sweeping sleigh designs. There is, therefore, everything that could be wanted to create comfort in every room in a home.
