The Different Types of Bedroom Furniture

Arched beds are the kinds of beds that have an arched headboard and elegant curves.  It is very traditional but at the same time gives of that feeling of warmth and welcome in the bedroom.  A canopy bed has always been a favourite and has been in existence for centuries.  These are beds that have been used by royalty and are very similar to a four-poster bed with decorative drapes that actually serves as an extra layer of safety against the elements.  The posts at each of the four corners are usually four feet high and extend above and over the mattress.  Daybeds serve a variety of functions and can be used for both seating and sleeping.  It resembles a sofa and is more of a cross between a chaise longue, couch and a bed.  To convert a daybed into a full-sized bed, you only have to pull out the trundle from under the bed.  These are ideal furniture for guest bedrooms and is a great space saving solution.  A panel bed has a headboard and footboard with a convex curve.  Some panel beds have raised panels and corner posts and leather padding on the headboard and footboard while some feature delicate shapes and carvings.  A platform bed is a very simple bed that is low and height and box like.  It is perfect for a contemporary bedroom and is very stylish.  It may or may not have a headboard.  A four poster bed has vertical columns in each corner.  These beds are very elegant and ornately designed and can be dated as far back as the sixteenth century.  These are beds that were used in castles.  A sleigh bed has curved or arched headboard and footboard that roll outward much like what sled or a sleigh looks like.  It is another of those beds that simply look elegant.  Upholstered beds usually have headboards that are covered with sumptuous fabrics, linen, velvet and other materials.  They can be quilted, twilled, patterned or simply solid.  A very popular type of upholstered bed is one with a tufted headboard.

Of course, a bedroom is never complete without nightstands where one could place books after reading at night or the TV remote.  There are generally three types of nightstands.  A closed nightstand only has two to four sets drawers but have no shelves.  An open nightstand has both drawers and shelves for displaying items such as magazines or books.  A pedestal on the other hand is a nightstand with small drawers.

Another integral part of a bedroom is a dresser, especially for women.  Double dressers looks like two single dressers side by side and can come with or without a mirror.  The number of drawers can be anywhere from four to twelve drawers.  A chest of drawers is a single dresser with four to eight drawers and is mainly for storage.  Lingerie chests are a little more different because they are narrower and taller and can usually accommodate up to seven drawers.

Miscellaneous bedroom furniture that can be added to the bedroom are armoires, bed benches, bed steps, chaise lounges, corner chairs, floor mirrors, jewellery armoires, home office desks and vanity tables.  Most bedroom furniture is also available in the finishes such as tobacco, espresso, light cherry, dark cherry, mahogany, maple, oak and walnut.

Any kind of bedroom furniture is a great addition to any bedroom as long as you have enough space for it and as long as you stick to one design.  A double bed that is too ornate will not fit nicely into a contemporary bedroom, may look out of place and may overpower other furniture in the room.  Of course, the kind of design you want to achieve will depend on personal preference but the best way to achieve that kind of design is to ascertain that all furniture pieces in the bedroom blend well with each other.
