How Pine Furniture Can Effectively Lift the Mood of a Bedroom

It may not seem apparent, but the choice of furniture in room can have a definite affect on the mood of the room itself. It is a psychological issue, of course, and works in much the same way as the arrangement of furniture can create calm, according of the laws of feng shui. When it comes to wood furniture, darker colours can drain a room of light, and lighter colours can enhance a sense of positivity, both of which can have a definite effect on the person in a room. Understandably, pine furniture is considered ideal.
In the case of bedrooms, for example, there is a predominance of pine in modern homes, with pine flooring complemented by a pine bed, a pine wardrobe and a pine chest of drawers. Of course, the wood is not always in its natural colour and can often be stained or painted. However, by and large, the colours include white, ivory and cream painted furniture that can accomplish the same brightening effect that the natural pale yellow hue of pine wood does.
Perhaps not everyone is convinced, and believe this sort of thing to be gobbledegook, but there is scientific evidence to support the theory behind colour therapy. Soon after the Second World War, in the late 1940s, research was conducted by a Russian scientist, SV Krakov, whereby he separated wavelengths of the light spectrum to isolate colour and measured their respective effects on the human nervous system. He found that under red light blood pressure rose, while under blue and white lights, the pulse rate fell and nervous system relaxed. As a result of his findings, colour therapy is used to treat a variety of ailments, including sleep disorders and seasonal affective disorder.
The fact is that a dark room can have a detrimental effect on mood, while a room filled with a bright light, such as natural daylight, can have an uplifting effect. What this means is that the sunnier the room the more positive boost a person will experience. No doubt, this is a welcome factor for all of us when getting up in the morning.
This is one of the reasons why bright furniture is desirable in a bedroom. Of course, they can benefit anywhere, with kitchens, for example, being one place where a lot of activity typically occurs and where a positiveness is ideal.
Pine has a natural brightness that maintains a high light rate in the bedroom through a variety of furniture options. Perhaps the most prominent piece after a bed is the wardrobe, and as such it can have a big bearing on the room.
The Mottisfont waxed pine combination wardrobe, for example, is a model with two doors, and three drawers and an exterior mirror. However, its natural colour, waxed to a high shine, serves to reflect natural sunlight around a room. It can also be painted, with a choice of white, ivory and cream available, depending on the desired decor and style.
A larger model is the Camden triple wardrobe, which comes in a mixture of solid pine and ash. It is a significant size, and obviously will only fit a larger bedroom. However, at almost 2 metres high and 1.7metres wide, it offers a huge amount of storage space as well as ample surface area.
Of course, taking up too much room will defeat the purpose, so choosing furniture that fits the room size and does not create narrow areas that are easily cluttered is important. So, more modest sized items, such as the One Range single solid pine wardrobe, would be better.
Narrow and tall, it allows for plenty of hanging room, but sports the natural yellow colour of pine. Alternatively, it can come in a variety of finishes, from lacquered to waxed, and as an item of white or cream painted furniture, can be equally effective in handling light.
Interestingly, while light is good for mood, it is not good for sleep, which is why heavy curtains are recommended for night time. That way, the perfect balance between dark and light, sleeping and waking, can be achieved. Thankfully, naturally coloured pine furniture will not glow in the dark!
How Reclaimed Pine Furniture Makes a Difference in More Ways than Environmentally
Posted by Kath Dawson on
April 4, 2011
Reforestation is a keenly held ideal of the modern furniture manufacturing industry, principally because of the need to have a continuous supply of new lumber with which to make new products. Planting one or two trees for every tree that is cut down is widely acknowledged to be a very effective conservation policy but there are other ways of answering the needs of the environment while also addressing the long standing need for wood furniture. One such way is reclaimed pine furniture.
Pine trees are amongst the fastest to grow, so there is generally little alarm when so much of this type of wood is available. Forests of a variety of types of trees are conserved but the speed at which pine tree populations regenerate themselves, means that there is plenty of scope in which to harvest them. In this way, furniture for every corner of the home, be it children’s bedroom furniture, stained kitchen furniture and even white painted furniture for the master bedroom, is available at affordable prices.
While reforestation is a relatively modern concept, having been championed in a major way over the last half century or so, there is a much longer history in reclaiming wood to make new items and tools.
Wood reclamation does not refer to buying and repairing antiques, or the sale of furniture that is second hand. It actually refers to the use of old wood in the manufacturing process. In a sense, the reclaimed wood is reborn. For example, oak beams from a condemned old mill can be recut to be used in the roofing of a new home, or mahogany panels on an old country manor can be used to make a dining room table.
Pine is an ideal wood for reclamation. It is a softwood and therefore easy for carpenters and craftsmen to rework, while also being durable so that even the oldest wood can retain its strength. It is not unusual, for example, for old pine flooring to become a sideboard or a chest of drawers, or perhaps a damaged pine bed to become a set of pine chairs. The variety of possible reincarnations is almost endless, and only really depends on the amount of good reclaimed wood that is available.
It is not difficult to understand why wood reclamation is so good for the environment. By reusing existing timber or furniture, and simply turning it into something new, the number of trees felled is reduced.
However, there are some other advantages, with the quality of wood from bygone eras generally recognised as being of higher quality. This is because the effects of global warming and other ecological changes were not factors that affected trees of 100 years ago or more. So, floor boards that are 150 years old will generally have tighter grains and greater strength. This means the reclaimed furniture can be higher quality than the newest models.
There is no shortage of furniture made of reclaimed pine, but many of the items reborn can be found amongst the ranges of bedroom furniture for children. The reason for this is that often the amount of reclaimed wood is less than the original piece, due to cutting. After all, a dressing table for a child is lower than one for an adult, a bed is shorter, a stool or a chair, meanwhile, has narrower seats and shorter legs.
Also, the fact that furniture made specifically for children is usually painted in bright colours means that blemishes that may exist on the wood can be covered up easily. Children like dramatic colours like, red, blue, pink and white, with coloured detailed carvings and edges also popular.
The same goes for upholstery, with colourful patterned materials placed over seats. In this way, plain white painted furniture can be made attractive in the eyes of a child, enlivening a room and making it more suitable for their playful minds.
There is no doubt that reclaimed pine furniture helps to make a difference to the environment, but there is more to it than that. Depending on how old the wood is, reclaimed furniture can be better quality than modern alternatives, while the specific needs of childrens bedroom furniture can be easily catered to.
Why Solid Pine Furniture Remains a Popular Choice amongst Designers and Consumers

The fact that pine has a significant role in the modern world is hardly a point that is going to be challenged. Think for a moment of the range of solid pine furniture available in furniture stores around the world, or the flooring in a home or even the homes themselves, and it is not hard to grasp its place. This abundant and fast growing breed of tree has been vital to societies around the globe. Pine has long been a favourite wood for many people across the world.
It does not matter whether it comes in the form of a simple pine sideboard or in the decidedly more elaborate form of an antique white dressing table of the revolutionary France period, pine furniture adorns hallways, living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens.
What might come as a surprise, however, is the fact that pine wood has been a significant commodity throughout history. For instance, the city of Venice, famed for its canals, architecture and political intrigue, is a city said to be built on the trade of pine. Many of its original building were of pine, and the city itself sprawls a group of islands that once hosted pine forests.
Pine has always been used by man to make weapons, tools and dwellings, while its cones were reputed to have been the favourite fuel amongst cavemen for fire. Its needles, meanwhile, were the main ingredient in herbal medicines, a fact supported somewhat by the popularity of vitamin rich pine needle tea in Sweden.
The history of pine wood as a desirable furniture material, as opposed to a practical local material, goes back to the 17th century when it became a popular wood for bedroom furniture. The prevalent dark hard woods of the time were too expensive for many people, but pine offered a more affordable option, and over the next 200 years, pine furniture spread out of the bedrooms and into the living rooms and dining rooms. Again, cost was the principal reason for its continued popularity, but with the advent of staining in the latter half of the 19th century, the selection of pieces produced from pine increased, strengthening its place in the market further.
Of course, even today, furniture made of solid pine remains one of the most popular on the market, and for many of the same reasons. Its attributes make it so, with this soft wood easy for craftsmen to work with and yet durable. This means that, as a long lasting material, items made from it are known to retain their good condition for decades. They do pick up a lot of dents and nicks over time, but these marks tend to blend better with the light colour of the wood, as opposed to darker, hard woods which show visible signs of chipping and scratching.
Solid pine also works well in unison with other woods and finishes, like with a white or ivory paint finish under a solid ash top. Fine examples of such a combination can be seen in the Camden range of painted pine and ash, which features a double pedestal dressing table with solid pine legs and frame and panelled drawers. These are painted white so as to add a contrasting, though nonetheless bright, colour to that of the flooring or walls, as well as a striking contrast with the lightly lacquered ash table top. The coloured finish makes the dressing table suitable for contemporary and well as more traditional decor styles.
The durability of painted furniture is increased by the use of knock resistant paint, which protects the wood from the wear and tear of everyday living. This makes it ideal for the bedroom or playroom of children, where banging, knocking and scratching can happen so easily.
The pine sideboard, meanwhile, has long been a characteristic in kitchens and dining rooms, as additional storage space for crockery and utensils inside, and perhaps decorative fruit laden bowls and wine decanters on top. Sturdy and practical, the sideboard can also enhance any style of the room, either as a brightly shined piece or as a darker stained, distressed piece.
Whichever piece is required, from a sideboard or kitchen table to a stained bed or crisp white dressing table, there is a stylish and quality made option in solid pine furniture. From history, it is clear we have always had a confidence in pine trees, a confidence which sprang from millennia using pine was reliable as a building, heating and healing resource.
Why Affordable Pine Living Room Furniture Does Not Translate to Cheap Pine Furniture
Posted by Kath Dawson on
April 4, 2011
They say that bargains are everywhere, but the trick is knowing what not to buy. Often, what seems to be a perfect deal turns out to be a disappointment because the low quality of the item matches the low price. Unsurprisingly then, many still insist on buying solid wood furniture, which never loses its value because of the sheer quality of its manufacture. The problem is that this can be costly, especially for the likes of oak and mahogany. More affordable options, like pine living room furniture, are out there.
Cheap has nothing to do with price, but actually the degree of craftsmanship that has been applied in its manufacture. Poor materials are destined to produce cheap furniture, just as poorly assembled pine is sure to produce cheap pine furniture. What can sometimes be thought of as cheap, such as painted furniture, is not because they have been created to the highest standards.
Pine is far from being the cheaper option when it comes to furniture for any room. It boasts a distinctive character, a refreshing airiness that seems to bring a room out of the home and closer to nature. To house plant lovers, these qualities complement a conservatory perfectly, or perhaps a living room which is enhanced with potted plants and greenery that is designed to serve the inhabitant outdoors.
Alternatively, pine offers crispness in its natural pale yellow hue that can also complement a more contemporary look, providing a sense of brightness and space for the minimalist touch.
Of course, the range of furniture options in solid pine is vast, but amongst the most popular are the robust styles of Midway Pine. These items are quite chunky in their structure, but it is one that clings to the earthiness of nature. The Midway pine coffee table, with two drawers, for example, boasts a sturdy shape and a nut brown finish, complete with shallow drawers beneath a thick solid pine top.
The marriage of contemporary and traditional is perfectly executed with the Midway pine TV unit, which at 1.2 metres in length and 45 cm’s in depth is large enough to house a modern home cinema unit. Again, the chunky style of the piece adds a sturdiness which can in turn lend a confidence in its ability to support the valuable equipment resting on it. It also includes two glazed doors behind which can be placed DVD players, games consoles or whatever else is desired, with holes for power cables conveniently provided at the back.
Just like its coffee table cousin, the TV unit can blend into any room style, from contemporary to the traditional or natural look, while the range of effects available on pine wood can add to its compatibility with its environs. One such effect is staining, which can darken the wood to suit the overall room tone as desired by the home owner. However, another option is painted pine, which opens up another realm of possibilities.
You will not be getting cheap furniture when opting for furniture that is painted. There is an obvious attraction in the natural grains of a solid wood piece of furniture but the colours are limited to the natural or stained. However, there is something to be said, aesthetically especially, for an ivory finish or crisp white finish, allowing quality solid wood furniture to be included in rooms of more contemporary designs. The finish can also allow for a selection of alternative handles and knobs to be used, such as stainless steel or chrome, which may not suit the rustic look of natural colours and grain.
The range of possibilities includes the Chateau range of furniture, made of mahogany but modelled on furniture of 18th century France. The style of this painted furniture is highly elegant, enhancing living rooms and hallways with a high class antique look, complete with intricate classic engravings.
At times, it may seem that cheap is the most affordable option, but the fact is that cheap relates to quality than to the price paid. It is not difficult to get cheap pine furniture for next to nothing, but the enduring quality of solid wood furniture means that the piece itself will always have a value.
Since pine comes at a price that does not break the bank, it means that affordable quality pine living room furniture, dining room furniture and kitchen furniture, is never hard to find.
Why Ash Furniture is the Affordable Solid Wood Alternative to Oak
Posted by Kath Dawson on
April 4, 2011
There is a satisfaction with solid wood furniture that its composite equivalent just cannot manage to equal. It comes from the certainty that one can associate with well crafted chairs, tables and cupboards. Traditionally, hard woods such as oak and mahogany were the favoured choices, but these have always cost a pretty penny. However, one more affordable alternative to more expensive hard wood furniture is ash furniture.
The ash option boasts the same type of impressive grain work that lends such earthiness to wooden furniture. It can be hard to resist the bright, golden lure of pine kitchen furniture, or for that matter painted pine furniture. But, for most of us, rustic quality of ash is the key attraction, while for designers of contemporary furniture, ash offers a lot of possibilities through its flexibility.
Ash is amongst the most popular woods used to manufacture furniture, and it is not difficult to see why. As a hard wood, it is durable and holds a natural resistance to decay, which in turn means it requires much less maintenance.
Surprisingly, despite being a hardwood, ash is very accommodating to the processes used in making furniture. So, nails and screws are easier to insert and the wood retains them securely. It also boasts a flexibility that allows it to bend with relative ease. As a result, it is used by furniture designers of all types, from traditional to contemporary, to create some of the most innovative forms.
It is, in effect, one of the most user friendly woods in use today. However, perhaps the biggest reason for the popularity of ash is its low cost. Ash is grown in greater abundance than most other hardwoods, bringing the price down and making them an extremely affordable option.
However, it is also a highly attractive wood to use in solid wood furniture, with white ash, for example, resembling oak and sharing many of the same structural qualities that oak is famed for. And, as it has a light, bright shade, ash furniture is loved in areas of a home where light is considered important, such as the bedroom, dining room and kitchen.
The kitchen, in fact, is a perfect room in which to point out the respective advantages of furniture made of ash and pine. Kitchen furniture made of pine have long been highly popular. It is no secret that light makes a huge difference to a kitchen. After all, it is a room in which the vast majority of family activity occurs, and the room that must marry a sense of industry with a welcoming atmosphere. This marriage can be helped by a flood of sunlight that makes spending time there all the more enjoyable.
Pine matches the brightening abilities of ash, but there are some obvious differences between ash wood and pine, not least that the latter is a soft wood and has a natural pale yellow colour. The similarities chiefly lie in the fact that pine is also abundant and is therefore very affordable, lends an airiness to rooms and is hard wearing, making it ideal for children’s furniture and kitchens.
Amongst the popular ash kitchen furniture is the traditional farmhouse style kitchen dresser, in which utensils, plates, cups and dishes of all sorts can be stored. The grounded qualities ash brings a sturdiness to the dresser and a greater sense of class. And, while pine versions are quality products to grace any kitchen, the ash version, with its distinctive grain highlighted by oils that brings the surface to an impressive shine, can catch the eye more readily.
Meanwhile, painted pine furniture can add a sense of elegance to a room. A perfect example is provided by the Camden painted pine range, which boasts an ivory finish that can create an eye-catching contrast with a pine or oak floor.
With wood that resembles oak so perfectly, ash furniture offers a type of sophistication that pine does not. However, both have individual styles that enhance a room, both in terms of its brightness and in its comfort, whether it is painted ash or pine furniture for the bedroom of a child, or ash or pine kitchen furniture for the newly developed kitchen drenched in the light of a conservatory.
How to Choose the Right Wardrobes for your Bedroom
Posted by Kath Dawson on
April 4, 2011
Choosing wardrobes to go into your bedroom are an exciting part of any decorating experience. Buying other pieces of furniture like sideboards and bookcases are also as exciting, but not as much as when compared with bedroom furniture. This is because you get to see bedroom furniture a lot of times, particularly before you sleep and when you wake up. Also, the bedroom is often associated with relaxing moments as well as a bonding moment for parents and young kids when they tuck their kids into bed at night.
As people grow, seasons change, or when people shift careers, the need for a wardrobe change also becomes needed. As such, ensuring that our wardrobes have enough space for clothes which will be needed during different times of the year is important as well. Here are a few tips to help you in choosing the right wardrobes for your home.
Consider the Size of your Room
How big your bedroom is will be one of the most influential factors to consider which will help you decide on what wardrobe to buy. It is true that the size of the wardrobe you choose needs to be big enough to hold all of your clothes, but at the same time, it should also not be too big for your bedroom. Ideally, your bedroom should have enough space for you to move, get dressed, and do other activities in it. Your wardrobe needs to fit comfortably in it in addition to your bed of course, and other furniture pieces inside your bedroom.
The Sizes and Quantity of your Clothes
How many clothes you have as well as how big and long your clothes are is another important factor to consider when buying wardrobes. You should look for wardrobes in which you can hang your shirts, dresses, and pants in it without having to fold them or get the ends crumpled. So choose wardrobes which are tall enough to accommodate all of your longer clothes, but should also be wide enough to fit in all of your folded clothes. If you cannot find wardrobes which are big enough to accommodate all of your clothes and fit in your bedroom at the same time, then you should consider putting some of your winter clothes into a trunk and then tucking them away until the next winter season.
Match the Other Furniture Pieces in Your Room
Another thing you should keep in mind when choosing wardrobes is to ensure that it will match the look and feel of the rest of the furniture in your bedroom. Some people, especially women, like to have a certain theme going on in their bedroom. So make sure to choose wardrobes which either match or go well with these. You can choose wardrobes which are painted with a colour that matches the rest of your bedroom, or you can choose wardrobes finished to give it an antique look. This would look great in a bedroom in which the furniture is predominantly made of wood.
Different Features and Functionality
If your bedroom is short of space, consider getting a wardrobe with a built in mirror. This would come very handy if you cannot squeeze in your room an additional dresser or a big mirror for you to see yourself as you get dressed for work, school, etc. If you also like to move things around whenever you want to redecorate your home, go for wardrobes with wheels. In this way, should you feel like giving your room a makeover, you will not have a hard time in rearranging your furniture. You can simply push it around a different side or corner of your room whenever you want to.
Give serious thought and consideration when buying wardrobes. Make sure you buy those which are made of solid wood, since you will want your wardrobe to be strong and durable enough to hold all of your clothes and last for quite some time. The same principles apply when you are buying bookcases and sideboards for your home. These are furniture pieces which a lot of people, like guests and visitors in your home, will definitely see and notice whenever they arrive in your home.
Practical Tips when Shopping for Bedroom Furniture Online
Posted by Kath Dawson on
April 4, 2011
Shopping for bedroom furniture, dining room furniture, and even an oak dining table over the internet offers its own conveniences. For starters, if you do not have enough time to visit different stores, you can simply sit on your computer and browse an unlimited number of online shops to make your purchase. Some people may just be too tired from work, or work at different hours of the day like during evenings which does not give them the opportunity to visit stores in the mornings since they are asleep during that time. If you are shopping for bedroom furniture online, do follow these practical tips to help you get the most out of your money and finances.
Make Sure You Pay Using a Secure Payment Method
Go for online shops which accept secure payments like PayPal. Before entering your credit card details into any website, make sure you look for an icon that looks like a padlock, and that the website has some form of SSL security or a certificate. This will help ensure that your credit card details are safe and sound. Be extremely wary of online sellers who insist on you sending the payment with Western Union or sending them cash, because once your money is in the hands of these sellers, there is no way for you to get your money back. The only time you should consider giving the online seller cash is if the two of you are meeting in a certain place wherein she or he already has the product you are purchasing and will complete the transaction with an exchange, sort of like cash on delivery.
Check the Reputation or Feedback of the Online Seller
There are a lot of online websites available, some even offer products and items in an auction style. When it comes to shopping online for bedroom furniture and other accessories for your home, it is important that you check the reputation or the feedback received by the online seller whose items you are interested in purchasing. The feedback a seller has received over time is a very important gauge in determining whether that person is someone you can trust. The more positive feedback and transactions that particular seller has acquired, the better. This means that the seller provides great service and is someone who can be considered as reliable in terms of completing transactions online. Make sure to read or browse through the feedback the seller received to give you an idea of how he or she deals with other people.
Ask All of your Questions
The setback of buying things online is that you do not have the opportunity to physically see and touch what you are buying before you make your final decision. However, you can request for actual pictures of the product you intend to buy from different angles to see it as much as possible. It is also very important to ask as many questions about the product as you can. Ask the seller if the item has any scratches, dents, bumps, and any other imperfections you should know about beforehand. This will definitely affect your decision in buying the product, considering the price of the furniture piece.
Another thing you should consider is if the seller offers a money back guarantee or some form of insurance that the furniture piece you are buying is free from defects. This should help you in the event that when you receive the product and you notice damages to it, you can get it replaced or your money refunded.
Getting your Order Delivered
Most online purchases are delivered to the home of the buyer, so there will definitely be a shipping fee to consider. This is another concern of most online shoppers, as they need to be home when what they ordered is delivered so they can inspect it properly and receive it as well. If you add the price of the product and the shipping fee as well, then that would give you an idea of how much the furniture piece would end up costing you, and you can make your decision from there.
When it comes to buying bedroom furniture online, make sure you exercise as much caution as possible since you are giving sensitive information online. This also applies if you are buying dining room furniture, an oak dining table, and pretty much other furniture pieces for your home.
Practical Tips in Choosing Bookcases for your Home
Posted by Kath Dawson on
April 4, 2011
Great bookcases are a welcome addition to any home, especially the home of a booklover. An oak bookcase is a great choice for people who want a stylish and functional bookcase to use in the home. Furniture pieces such as an oak computer desk, act as both a decorative and functional piece of furniture. The computer desk, if it is the type with drawers underneath, can serve as storage space for paper and other office supplies. On the other hand, bookcases can hold a lot of other things in addition to books. This article discusses several practical tips in choosing bookcases for your home.
Where the Bookcase will be Placed
One of the things you should consider when choosing bookcases is where you will be putting it. This will give you an idea of how big or how small of a bookcase you can buy. You will also be able to choose a bookcase which fits the corner of your living room, or maybe even occupy one whole wall if you have a lot of things to store in it. In any case, you should have an idea of where you will place the bookcase even before you go out and look for one, so that you can make a realistic choice in terms of size.
Stationary or Mobile
If you are the type of person who likes to move the furniture in their home around for a new look every season or perhaps you have sudden urges to redecorate, then choose a bookcase which is easy to move. If you know that where you will be placing the bookcase will be its permanent place in the home, then go with a stationary one, or one which is mounted or installed in your wall. There are some bookcases available in which you will have to assemble it yourself, and the stationary ones which will be fixed on your wall will need some form of installation, so that is an additional cost you should consider.
The Height of Rows
Different bookcases have different numbers of rows, and most of the time, these rows come in different heights or sizes as well. It is therefore important that you know how tall the books you will be placing in the bookcase are, as well as any other decorative items and collectibles you will be placing. If you can measure the books you will be storing by inches, then that would be the best thing to do. You should also measure any knick knacks, decorative items, collectibles, and even bookends which you will be placing inside the bookcase to ensure everything will fit. Do not forget to have a few inches of allowance so that you can easily add more things inside the bookcase as the situation allows for it.
Design and Style
Most of the time, bookcases can be viewed by other people who enter your home, like your guests for example. As such, it is important that you choose a bookcase that will be an attractive addition to your home. If you are buying a bookcase for a living room with existing furniture as an addition to the room, make sure you choose a bookcase that looks great with the rest of the living room furniture. You should also make sure that the decorative items you will be placing in the bookcase alongside your books and reading materials all have a pleasant look and feel with them.
You can also find bookcases which come with beautifully detailed carvings which add a more elegant and sophisticated touch to your bookcase. If you have a living room which is decorated pretty much with antiques, then you should look for a bookcase which is made of treated wood which gives it an antique look, even though it may be brand new. You can also purchase a bookcase painted a certain colour which goes well with the rest of your home.
When it comes to bookcases, choosing a decorative and stylish yet functional one is a must. If you are looking for a bookcase for your home, an oak bookcase is usually the best choice because of its durability and strength. Consider getting an oak computer desk as well to match your bookcase.
How Great Sideboards Can Spice Up Any Dining Room
Posted by Kath Dawson on
April 4, 2011
The dining room is one of the busiest parts of any house. This is where meals are shared as well as conversations with family members, relatives, and people who come to visit. One of the most important things in addition to the regular dining room furniture is great sideboards. These sideboards serve as both decorative and functional pieces of furniture in your dining room. Having said so, choosing a sideboard needs just as much thought and effort as you would your living room furniture, since your guests will be able to see your sideboards once they are in your dining room. You can be a little lenient when it comes to your bedroom furniture and go with whatever you prefer, but sideboards are a totally different thing.
What a Sideboard Is
A sideboard is basically a piece of functional furniture which is usually found in dining rooms. This furniture piece contains several drawers as well as cabinets or cupboards where silverware, plates, and other utensils used in the dining room is placed and stored. The height of a sideboard is usually up to the waist of a person, and the top part of it is usually used for serving food, holding plates and dishes, and even some lighting devices. To put it simply, imagine yourself walking in a dining room where a party or gathering is being held. The food is not on the dining table as well as the plates and utensils you need in order to eat, but on a table which is approximately as high as your waist, kind of like a buffet table. Once you have picked up a plate, utensils, and picked out the food you will eat and placed it on your plate, you can proceed to the dining room table to sit down and eat.
Tips in Choosing a Sideboard
There are plenty of different sideboard designs to choose from, as well as the materials they are made from, not to mention how the top part of the sideboard is finished. A lot of the traditional sideboards are made with full wood, while some have marble tops. It is a good idea to choose a sideboard which comes with a top that matches or at least goes well with the rest of the furniture in the dining area.
Since a sideboard is primarily a functional piece, make sure to choose one which has the right size and kind of drawers and cupboards. It is best to know what pieces you will be storing in the sideboard, like if you will be storing tall plates, serving bowls of food, big forks, etc. From there, you can choose a sideboard which has cupboards and drawers that can hold your items properly.
Wooden sideboards are a great addition to any dining room, especially if the rest of the dining room furniture is made of wood as well. Make sure to choose solid wood as sideboards usually last for a very long time, especially if it is made with quality wood like oak for instance. You can hand your sideboard down to your children as the years go by as an antique and as a decorative way to store items in the dining room.
If you have young kids at home, it would be best to choose a sideboard which does not have pointed edges. There are oval sideboards which would be great for homes with children, or you can go with the rectangular shaped ones if there are not any kids around. Make sure to inspect how the shelves and drawers are made, as well as how firmly the hinges are attached.
When you are shopping for a sideboard, try to give it a little wiggle and see if the sideboard will tilt. This will give you an idea if all of the legs of the sideboard are levelled with each other and will also ensure that whatever you put on top of it stays on top of it. During gatherings, the possibility of having someone lightly bump the sideboard is very likely. This is why it is very important to choose one which is firm and stable.
When choosing sideboards, make sure to remember that these are not just decorative pieces of furniture, but they are functional as well. It is best to get a sideboard that is beautiful and can store all of the things you need to keep in it properly. Plus, since your guests can see your sideboard like your living room furniture, choose wisely. This is not like your bedroom furniture in which only those you invite in your bedroom will be able to see it.
Great Tips in Choosing Living Room Furniture
Posted by Kath Dawson on
April 4, 2011
Whether you are redecorating your home or starting from scratch, choosing great living room furniture is important. If you think about it, whenever you have guests or other relatives over, they do not automatically go to the dining room for dinner nor do they stay there for longer once the meal is finished. The living room is basically where all of the interaction happens, so it is just important that this room is well decorated.
What makes a great living room is not just the furniture, it is the whole room in itself. There should be enough space to accommodate all of the activities you will be doing there but still have that cosy and inviting look and feel to it. There should also be enough seats for everybody, and the room should be functional and beautiful at the same time. Most of the time, light oak furniture for the living room works great, and not just for the living room but even for wardrobes as well. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right living room furniture for your home.
How Much Space Your Living Room Has
Just because you fell in love with a certain furniture piece does not mean you should jump the wagon and buy it. What a lot of people often forget is to know the size of their living room. This allows you to make more realistic decisions in terms of which living room furniture to buy. Big may not always be the best in all cases, and this applies to furniture. You will want to go with pieces which are functional, beautiful, and still leaves you with enough space to move around in your living room once you have everything put into place.
Blending with Other Furniture Pieces
Choosing living room furniture for a room which already has a few pieces of furniture in it or may already have some sort of a theme going on can be quite harder compared with starting with an empty room. You need to make sure that the new furniture you choose will go well with the rest of the pieces currently present. So even if you may have had your eye on a beautiful oak chair but it would stick out like a sore thumb when paired with the rest of the furniture currently in your living room, then it may not be the best idea. Even though it is just living room furniture, you should also ensure that the furniture pieces look well with what is in the living room and the rest of the house as well.
The People in the Family
If you think choosing living room furniture is all about how it will look once everything is put together, think again. Think of the people living in your home, and how these furniture pieces will suit them. For example, families with small children may not benefit from furniture pieces with glass tops as well as tables with pointed edges. Kids running around the house may accidentally run into them and get bumps, bruises, and possibly even cuts from broken glass. So when you choose your living room furniture, think of the people in the house and the things that could possibly happen while they are in the living room so you can prepare for all possible scenarios.
How Long You Will Have these Pieces
When you choose your living room furniture, think of how long it will likely stay in your family. This is a very important factor especially if the piece you are looking at is quite expensive. If you are considering getting wood furniture, strive to ensure that the pieces you are getting are made from solid wood, with no ply board or MDF in it. Even if the price you have to shell out initially may seem like a pretty big amount, if you will be able to use the pieces for a very long time, then that is not such a bad deal.
When choosing wood furniture for wardrobes, dining room and living room furniture, make sure you are dealing with a reputable seller of such pieces. There are times when it may be hard to spot a solid wood furniture piece from one which has ply board in it, so it is always best to be on the safe side. Think of buying light oak furniture as an investment because with proper care, these pieces can last for a long, long time.
